The Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major is one of Rome’s four major papal basilicas, located at Piazza di Santa Maria Maggiore. Its long history, gilded ceiling and layered early Christian, Romanesque, Renaissance and Baroque architecture reward a focused visit.
The basilica is open daily from 7am to 6:30pm, while timed visits or special access may require advance planning.
